My First Holiday

Today I got home from my very first holiday.

Holidays are funny things. It is where you go for a long drive in the car, and at the end you stay in someone else’s house. I did like being in a new house, as it gave me the opportunity to investigate lots of new things. Also I particularly liked this house as the people who own it are called Nanna and Granddad, and they buy us lots of special treats (like Mars bars) and will always stop what they are doing to make a fuss of us. Jack and George have been here lots of times, so they quickly explained how we must follow Nanna around a lot and then whenever Mum isn’t looking she will give us chocolate and kiss our heads.

Mum had bought our beds so we quickly settled down even though this was my very first holiday. Later that afternoon we were put back in the car again and set off on another drive to a place called the beach.

The beach turned out to be a very exciting place indeed, with sand for running on and funny moving water that chases you. Jack did a bit of running and barking with us and then went off to do his own thing (he can be quite dull, as he likes to walk quite slowly and sniff absolutely everything). George on the other hand did some running and then kept trying to lie down in the moving water. This was great because I got to race in and pounce on top of him in an effort to protect him from the waves. Sadly he didn’t seem to appreciate all of my efforts, but I wasn’t upset as I had fun anyway. Finally it was time to go back to our new house, where I was relieved to discover that Mum had remembered to bring our food so we had a nice big dinner.

Later on after all the humans had eaten Nanna fixed us another dinner out of something she called ‘leftovers’. I wasn’t sure about this to begin with, but I soon decided that I really love chicken curry and rice I hope Mum cooks it for us sometime when we go home.

The next morning Mum got up nice and early and took us back to the beach. The beach was even better this time, as the fishermen who had been there during the night had kindly left several large partially filleted fish skeletons on the beach for us. George found the first one so he grabbed the head end and I grabbed the tail end and we both galloped down the beach together to present it to Mum. When we caught up with Mum neither of us wanted to let go of our fish, so we just ran around her while she shouted at us to put that disgusting thing down. Honestly the fish was lovely and it hardly smelt at all.

Tegan, Nigel and George go paddling in the sea.

Finally we did put it down so we could go and play in the water again. After George not wanting to play with me yesterday I made some new friends called seagulls. Our game consisted of me running after then whenever they tried to land. I also ran in and out of the water a lot, and to dry myself off I rolled in the sand. I really like the beach and was sad when it was time to leave (particularly as Mum wouldn't let George and I bring our fish in the van to show Nanna).

When we got back to Nanna’s we had breakfast and a little snooze in the garden, and then it was time to get back in the van and go home. I was very disappointed, as we hadn’t been away for very long at all. Mum said next time we would stay longer but she has been a little worried that I might not settle in a new house so had decided to make our first trip a short one. Honestly I do love my Mum, but how she could think I wouldn’t like a new house and trips to the beach I just don’t know. George was also very upset that it was time to go, and Dad had to put his lead on and drag him off the sofa and out to the van.

Anyway now I have had my first holiday and I hope I have another one again really soon.
