Thank You

Although we only had Jerry for five and a half months, now that he has gone I realise there are a lot of people who were part of his life. I would like to take this opportunity to thank them.

Katie (vet), Debbie and Lucy (vet nurses): for taking such great care of Jerry, and ensuring he was able to leave with dignity. Also for the wonderful flowers which made us feel more than just another patient.

Richard (alternative vet): for admitting he couldn’t offer much treatment, but still being prepared to listen to me talk about Jerry for over an hour, and well past surgery closing.

Sheila (advice on diet): for testing Jerry early on, and diagnosing his allergies. This allowed him to stop itching. Also for sharing her own experiences of losing a dog to osteo and telling me to just enjoy the time we had left.

Katie (dog club): for down to earth advice, and being prepared to let Jerry join one of her classes.

Cathy (Croftview Greyhound Kennels): for keeping in regular touch, and offering support and understanding always. Also for thinking of Jerry as more than just another dog she had rehomed.

Andy (photographer): for taking those wonderful pictures of Jerry that I will treasure forever.

Tara (my five year old niece): for the beautiful card and picture of Jerry which arrived the day he was put to sleep.

Alyson (friend): for showing me the joy of Greyhounds all those years ago, and for being there when I found out Jerry had cancer.

Caroline (friend): for being as excited about getting Jerry as I was. For inviting us on one last weekend at the beach. For talking endlessly about Jerry, and reminding me of all the good stuff and refusing to let me wallow.

Tommy and Rose (next door neighbours): for allowing Jerry free run of their house and garden.

Beryl and George (parents in law): for not batting an eyelid when we turned up for the weekend with three large Greyhounds in tow. Also for all the ‘secret’ treats that I know Beryl gave Jerry when she thought I wasn’t looking!

Wendy (dog walker): for loving Jerry and being patient when he was tired.

Circle of Grey (Yahoo group offering support to owners of ill greyhounds): what can I say about this group. I was offered endless support and useful advice. It would have been so much harder without you.

Steph (healing blanket scheme): for sending Jerry a beautiful blanket half way across the world, and making us both feel part of something bigger.

Ron and Vivian (owners of the house on the beach where Jerry spent his last weekend): for letting someone they had never met (and her three dogs) spend three glorious days in their beautiful house.

Mary (Cambridge Pet Crematorium): for being so understanding and treating Jerry with the utmost respect.

To everyone who sent e-mails, cards, and messages of support. I received so may that I couldn’t reply personally to them all, but I read and appreciated every single one.

And finally to Nigel, for loving Jerry as much as I did.
