Jerry's Story

Jerry with George & Jack
Jerry with George and Jack

My name is Jerry and I am 11 years old. I used to race under the name Slaney View Stag, and when I retired from racing I went to live with a new family. I stayed with this family for five years, but as I got older I started to find it a bit stressful as several small children started living in the house too.

So, one day I was taken to a new place called Croftview Greyhound Rehoming Kennels, where lots of other greyhounds like me lived. I shared a kennel with another old dog called Judy, and although she bossed me around a bit I really liked her (even though sometimes she wouldn’t let me in the bed and I had to sleep on the floor). Everyone at the kennels was really nice to me and we got taken for walks and were allowed to run around in paddocks, but it was still a bit confusing as I was so used to living in a house.

One day a lady and man came to see me, and they took me for a walk with two other greyhounds called Jack and George who were brindle just like me. The lady fed me treats so I was sad when she left, but a few weeks later she came back with her two dogs again and we all went for a walk. I tried to look particularly sad and kept pulling to try and get in the back of her van which was filled with duvets and looked very comfortable, but again she went away. All the staff kept telling me she would come back and then I would go to my new home but I didn’t really know when.

Jerry with George & JackFinally just after Christmas, she came again, and this time I was finally allowed in the back of her van with the other two dogs. I lay down immediately and all of the staff who had taken care of me came out to say goodbye and take my photo. We then went on a long drive and I slept the whole way. Finally we stopped and I was let into my new home. I was very excited and ran around sniffing everything. Then I was very tired and lay down on my bed. Initially I tried to get into a bed with one of the other greyhounds but they explained that we didn’t have to share, and I could sleep on my own.

I soon discovered there were lots of good things about my new home. My new Mum was kind and there were comfy beds and lots of food. We went on lots of nice walks in woods and fields, and once I showed how good I was at coming back I was allowed off the lead with all the other dogs. I think my mum must know all the greyhound owners within 100 miles because every time we go out we seem to meet up with another greyhound. My new Dad is good too because when he thinks no one else is looking he will slip me special treats or secretly pat me which makes me feel really special. The downside to my new home is that I had to have several baths, and Mum keeps cleaning my ears out, although I guess this is a small price to pay.

We get lots of treats here and my favourite is definitely pigs’ ears. At first Mum wasn’t sure if I would be able to manage a pigs ear, as I don’t have many teeth left, but I soon showed her! Other than that I like to sleep a lot on my new bed and play in the garden with Jack and George. Dinnertime is my favourite time of day and as soon as I hear the bowls I come rushing into the kitchen. Mum now has a special cloth used just for wiping all of my drool up off the kitchen floor.

I think I will be very happy here, and Mum said we can even go back and visit all my friends at Croftview to let them see how well I am getting on.
