Mum Discovers Croftview Kennels

November 2001

Things were going along nicely, and it had just been George and I at home for ages. In fact after Mum adopted George she seemed to stop doing that fostering thing. I like to point out to George that after Mum got me she also had lots of other greyhounds come to stay, but after his arrival she stopped. I am sure that there is a message here.

One evening I heard Mum talking to Dad about another dog. She knew all about this dog because she had seen him on something called ‘the Internet’. She went on and on about him and eventually she and Dad went upstairs to the office so they could both have a look. I found this quite confusing, as I know we don’t have any dogs in the office but I soon fell back asleep and forgot about all this talk of new dogs.

A few days later Mum loaded us all in the van and we set off on a long journey. It took so long that George and I had to take it in turns to be the one to leap up and start whining (on shorter trips we can both whine more or less constantly). We turned off the motorway and started going down small country lanes which looked promising for a good walk, and even better was when I spotted several other Greyhounds being walked. This meant we must be going somewhere with racing and lures and stuff, so both George and I bounced in a very excited way until the car stopped. When Mum and Dad got out they left us in the van, which seemed a bit mean, but soon Dad came back to get us out.

Dad hardly ever walks more than one of us as we like to run around his legs and get all tangled up. He doesn’t think this is funny, and tells Mum that we are both very naughty*, but thankfully she finds it funny too. As we were so excited about all the other greyhounds we forgot to wrap our leads round Dad’s legs on this occasion, and eventually saw Mum heading towards us holding another Greyhound. Having been through this before I immediately knew what this meant and tried to warn George not to be too friendly, otherwise eventually that dog would end up in our house. George of course just rushed straight over to say hello and kept wagging his tail while I pretended to be a bit aloof. We all set off for a walk and I forgot to be aloof and next thing I know Dad is taking pictures of all of us together. This is another very bad sign, but I quite liked this new dog so I kept forgetting to pretend that I didn’t, and frankly George was no help at all.

When we got back to the kennel place Dad put us in the van and Mum took the new dog (his name is Jerry) back inside. She was a long time, and when she came back out she had lots of pieces of paper, which say that Jerry will be coming to live with us in a few weeks time. It might actually be quite nice to have another brother, so perhaps it is a good thing that we found this place called Croftview.

June 2002

Well I should have known it was only a matter of time before we came back to Croftview. We like going there because there are lots and lots of Greyhounds, and we get to meet them and walk them, and the last time we went we ended up with a lovely new brother. We have also been on several occasions to drop in food and blankets for the Greys who have to live in kennels. Frankly some of the treats we took at Christmas looked rather nice, but Mum insisted we take them all into the kennels and didn’t leave any in the car (I did tell George to suck his stomach in more).

Anyway this time was the same as when we first met Jerry. Dad got George and I out of the car, and Mum disappeared and came back holding a new dog. The first one was a huge, bouncy male called Pauley, and even George didn’t know quite what to make of him. We all pranced around for a bit and were very civilised, but even though I tried not to show it, I was actually quite frightened. I don’t think anyone noticed me hiding behind Dad’s legs (although I did come out to pee a few times).

Then Mum disappeared again and came back with small, fawn, bitch HURRAH. Both George and I liked her a lot, and we all danced around doing lots of sniffing and tail wagging. We walked up the lane, and Dad took pictures of us all standing on a green, which after what happened last time had to a good sign. When we got back to the kennels Mum was inside for ages (we had a biscuit in the car) and this means that she will be coming to live with us in a few weeks. This is the first time we have had a girl to stay, and we are VERY excited. Her name is Defa (although Mum says that will probably change to something like Tegan) and you will be able to learn more about her on her very own page shortly.
