Jack at the Canine Film AcademyWhen I first arrived in my new home I attended a course at our local dog training school, but after that although Mum did do a bit of training with me when we were out and about, we didn’t go back to school anymore. I quickly got bored working on endless sits and stays. And lots of the exercises were geared towards obedience competitions, and involved fetching things that I was really never interested in. I never understood why, if she really wanted the ball so much, then why did she throw it away in the first place? Then in December 1999 Mum read an article about a place called the Canine Film Academy, where they teach dogs all sorts of neat tricks just for the fun of it, so this is how we came to be heading there one Saturday in January. Initially I wasn’t too sure, but I soon worked out that it involved lots of fuss and treats and decided it might not be such a bad thing after all. For me however the best bit was the professional photo shoots that you get to take part in as an addition to the regular Saturday classes. I just love having my picture taken and will stay on set forever as long as the flash is going. George doesn’t understand this at all, and thinks I am mad performing tricks for a tiny piece of liver, but I know he only says this because he knows he is not as clever and photogenic as I am. When we are training at home initially George will come over to see what treats are on offer, but if he doesn’t get anything immediately then he just goes and gets back in his bed. So far I have earned my Bronze Clicker award (for having 15 different behaviours on cue) and won several awards for best model dog on set at a photo shoot. Last term (December 2001) I also won the Sue Lloyd Memorial Award for being the most improved dog in the whole school. Mum keeps all of my photos and certificates in a special album, and below are some of the photos I have had taken (click thumbnails for a larger picture.)
