George's 5 Year Anniversary

It is five years today (3rd July 2004) since we signed the adoption papers that made George a permanent member of our family. Technically he has been with us longer than that, as he actually arrived as a foster, but after being turned down by 2 potential homes (one for being too big and the other for being too old) we accepted that he was just destined to be with us. Even though he has been with us for so long, George is just one of those dogs that you can't help but always be grateful for.

George is 11 now and has slowed down a lot. He doesn't play with stuffies much anymore, but does still love to bounce, run, sleep, and eat raw chickens! He adores people and can be very persistent when he thinks he deserves a fuss. In his life George has never yet met a person who does not love him (whether they like it or not!). From the day he arrived George has always loved the water, and when out on walks he will often take himself off to the river to indulge in some 'greyhound swimming' (laying in the shallows). At home he has to make do with a paddling pool, which he will lay in for hours.

He has worked out that he can't actually outrun the other dogs anymore, so when we are out on walks he will wait until I put Tegan on her lead and then race in big circles around her. Some days I can't work out whether he gets more pleasure from the simple joy of running, or from winding Tegan up into a frenzy!

We nearly lost George a few years ago when he severed an artery in his front leg while out on a walk. The leg never did fully recover, and to this day one of his greatest weapons is his limp. If his limp alone fails to win him adequate sympathy he will lift his bad leg up, to clearly show whoever is watching that he is indeed crippled, and the only thing that will ease his pain are cuddles and adoration.

George remains in charge of the other dogs in the house, and some would also say he is in charge of the people who live here too. He will be celebrating today with a whole raw chicken and some of his canine and human friends who are popping in for afternoon tea. We will be celebrating with champagne!
