Moving to Our New Home in Switzerland

Feb 2003

I have been in my new home for several months now and we have settled into a fairly steady routine, which suits me perfectly. When the doorbell rings Mum always opens the back door for me first so I can go and stand outside until the coast is clear. Usually I wait in the garden until she comes out to let me know that whoever was visiting has gone, but today when I went back inside I discovered that lots of the furniture had been moved, and our beds had all been put in the bottom of huge plastic crates. This was very scary so I stood at the door looking at them for a while.

Tegan and George were asleep in theirs, but Jack was lying on the floor on the other side of the room. Eventually I went into the living room and just lay in front of my bed in the corner, as I was too frightened to touch the new crate. Mum let me lie there for a while and then came and started throwing treats into the crate for me. At first I just looked at them but finally I got in my crate and this was when I discovered it wasn't scary at all. In fact it is rather nice having such a secure bed with walls all round.

Today was a very scary day as several strange men came to our house. Thankfully Mum took me straight outside and put me in the back of the van where I would be safe. It would have actually been a fairly quiet way to pass the time if Tegan hadn't kept leaping up to bark at people walking by.

Today we had to go outside again which I didn't mind at all as the strange men were back. We had bones to eat and when I had finished mine I discovered a new game called digging. All by myself I dug an enormous hole in the middle of the lawn and then I lay down in it. I was all covered with mud and very pleased with myself, but when Mum came to let us back inside she didn't seem too impressed.

When everyone had gone we went back into the house and just as I was starting to relax we were all bundled outside and put in a strange van. We went to stay at another house, which wasnt too bad as our crates, were put in one room and the new people didnt try to look at me or touch me, but Mum came and sat with me and told me everything would be alright.

Today started well with a nice walk in some exciting woods but after that it all got a bit scary. We were back in the van with our crates again, and when we stopped we were at the scariest place I have ever been. It was noisy, and there were lots of people, and they all kept trying to look at us and touch us. Thankfully while the others had to walk into the scary building on their leads, I was allowed to hop straight in my crate and was wheeled in on a trolley. Once we were inside Mum found a quiet place for all our crates and covered mine with coats and blankets so no one could see me. The other dogs sat outside their crates, but I was much happier hiding under a blanket.

Eventually my crate was lifted back onto a trolley and wheeled away with the others. We stayed in our crates outside while they were all put together on a large lift, and lifted right up high. I was quite scared about this, but then they were slid into a dark place, which was a bit like the back of Mums van. I was quite happy that all the strange people had gone away and went back to sleep.

When we were lifted out of the dark we went back on another trolley except now it wasnt as scary as I knew no one was going to touch me or take me out of my crate. Finally we saw Mum and she pulled the trolley outside and took us out of our crates and put us in a car. We drove for a while and Jack and I stood with our noses out the window smelling lots of interesting smells. Finally the road became rough and right at the top of a hill a house was standing all on its own. There were no people anywhere and it was very peaceful. Even when we went for a walk we didnt see any other people so I was pleased to be in this new place.

Well, although there have been a couple of scary days recently, it is all worth while now we have settled down in our new house. I love our new house, as it is right on top of a hill with a garden almost all of the way around.

Most of the time the back door is open and this means if I hear a car coming up the road I can run outside and keep an eye on it. If people get out I bark at them and then all the other dogs rush out to join me.

Mostly though I just lay outside in the sunshine and snooze. Sometimes Mum even lets me eat my dinner outside, and we go for lovely walks up the hill where there are no other people. All in all I think this new place is a perfect home for me.
