Buttons's Tenth Birthday

January 5th 2004

Today was my 10th birthday. Birthdays are sort of like Christmas but on Christmas day all of us get presents, whereas on birthdays only one dog gets presents, and today that dog was me. My first treat came at breakfast time. I had a poached kidney and all the juices on my breakfast! I just love kidneys, and Mum said it was a huge treat that wouldn't be happening too often, as she isn't keen on the smell of poaching kidneys first thing in the morning. Personally I think she is mad, as I love nothing more than the smell of cooking offal any time of the day, and spent the entire time it was cooking sniffing around the kitchen and getting underfoot.

My next big surprise was when Mum got home from the afternoon walk. I don't like to go on walks too often and Mum never tries to force me. Anyway when she got back she had bought two of my very favourite people with her. Larissa and Nina (and their two dogs Jeremy and Sharon) had come for afternoon tea. Nina played in the garden with me (I like to run with her), and then she came and sat on my bed and helped me open all my presents. The presents were lots of lovely things to eat, which I know I will really enjoy, even though there was mention of the word 'sharing'. It is at times like this where being part of a pack of four is not so great, but there were quite a lot of treats, so I suppose it will be ok.

When Dad got in from work I had another present to open, and this time it was a squeaky toy. It was actually a very good one as it had lots of fuzzy hair for me to pull off after I had finished shredding the paper. After I had opened my present Mum took some pictures of me wearing a silly hat, but then she let me play with my toy some more so it wasn't too bad.

For dinner I had lovely chicken pieces and spaghetti, all covered with a sprinkling of cheese, and afterwards I had a pigs ear to chew. Mum and Dad made an extra lot of fuss of me all evening and I didn't even have to get out of my bed as they came and sat with me.

All in all it was a very nice day indeed.
