Stomach UpsetsUpset stomachs are a common problem. Quite often this will appear to get worse over the first few days, as it may be at least partially stress related. Usually this will settle down of its own accord over time. Although it may be tempting to spoil your new pet with lots of treats, it is best to avoid these as much as possible at first, and just stick to the complete food you have decided to feed. There are several homeopathic remedies that seem to help. These are Arsen alb. and Merc sol. which are available from most chemists. You can also add cooked pumpkin or bone meal to your dog's regular food, as both of these are helpful for controlling upset stomachs. If the problem continues beyond a couple of days Slippery Elm is another natural supplement that can help to soothe the lining of the gut. One of the things which commonly causes upset stomachs are dairy products, so it may be worth avoiding these initially. It is also worth taking the time to read the ingredient list on any chews and treats you plan to offer, as milk and milk products are often a major component. In the early days the best way to avoid stomach problems is to seek advice from the kennel that your dog came from about what to feed. Trying to copy the diet they are used to is a good idea and many kennels will send a dog home with a diet sheet and sometimes even a sack of food. Information contained herein is provided 'as is'.
