Training Your DogWhen your new dog first arrives the main reason for you training him will be to have a well-behaved and reliable pet that is a joy to both you and all others who meet him. I must emphasise that training is an invaluable activity for stimulating your dog's mind, improving your relationship with him, and building confidence and trust. Once he has mastered the basic commands, it is still a good idea to continue working with him on a one to one basis. This may take the form of further obedience work, agility, a dog club, or just teaching a few simple tricks in the back garden. The most important thing is to make these training sessions fun and rewarding. You can do this by always using positive reinforcement methods of training, and choosing activities that will be suitable for your particular dog. For example, Tegan came to me at age 6 with no previous injuries. She enjoys active, physical games and challenges, and her favourite reward is anything squeaky. Jerry came to me at age 11 with the obvious mobility issues expected in a dog of his age. He loved to sit or play games he could do without getting up from his bed. His favourite reward was hot dog pieces, which I would hide under multiple upturned cups for him to sniff out. Even a quick 10-minute session once a week will ensure your dog remains responsive to you, and interested in learning new things. Information contained herein is provided 'as is'.
